How Accessible Is Your School?

Answer the following questions to see how accessible your school is.

Outside The School

Are the crosswalks painted a contrasting color? Yes No
Having crosswalks in bright contrasting color helps everyone see the proper place to cross.
Is there a handicap parking spot closest to the front door or to the ramp? Yes No
There should be at least one handicap parking spot closest to the main entrance or ramp.

Front Door

How wide is the front door opening to your school? inches
The doorway needs to be wider than 32 inches for someone who uses a wheelchair or crutches to get into a room easily.

Main Office

How many inches off the floor is the countertop at the main office? inches
The counter height should be no higher than 48 inches from the ground so someone in a wheelchair can see over it easily.

Stairs

Are there railings on both sides of all stairs? Yes No
Having railings on both sides of the stairs allows someone who needs to hold onto the railing to use either side of the stairs.
Is there a way for someone using a wheelchair or crutches to get up and down the stairs? Yes No
Either an elevator or a stair lift is needed to allow someone using a wheelchair or crutches to get to other floors in the building.

Water Fountain

How many inches off the floor is the lowest water fountain spout? inches
The water fountain spout needs to be no higher than 36 inches for someone in a wheelchair to reach it.
How far off the ground is the bottom of the water fountain? inches
The bottom of the water fountain needs to 27 inches for someone using a wheelchair to fit under it to get a drink.

Bathroom

What are the dimensions of the largest stall? inches wide by inches long
The space inside the stall needs to be at least 56 inches by 48 inches for someone in a wheelchair to have enough space to enter and turn around.

Cafeteria

How many inches off the ground is the cafeteria line slide for the trays? inches
The tray slide should be no higher than 34 inches off the ground so someone in a wheelchair is able to move their tray down the line without needing help to push it.

Library

How many inches are there between the stacks? inches
There should be at least 42 inches between the library stacks to allow someone in a wheelchair to move easily between the stacks.

Signs

Are there Braille signs outside the classrooms and offices? Yes No
Having Braille signs lets someone who is blind identify his/her location.

Alarms

Do the emergency alarms flash or light up when the alarm sounds? Yes No
Having lights on the emergency alarms allows someone who is deaf know to exit the building because there is an alarm.
